Elaine Suzanne Miller is a Chicago-based portrait, editorial, and fine art photographer.
Since 2011, she has worked as a digital tech and photography editor in the commercial world, giving her a deep understanding of the post-production process—and making her a thoughtful and critical editor of her own work.
For portrait commissions, she approaches each session as a vulnerable exchange between photographer and subject allowing each person to feel both authentic and celebrated in front of the camera.
As an avid art collector and lifelong art-school kid, Elaine is especially drawn to editorials with visual and performing artists, clothing designers, and vintage dealers. She loves bringing their creative practices to life through playful, thoughtful collaboration.
In 2018, she began an extensive project on the Mormon faith titled Modern Day Revelations, collecting stories and portraits of people who have converted to—or left—the religion, while traveling to heritage sites to document and revisit the symbols she grew up with before leaving the faith herself.
Elaine’s personal work explores themes of death, transience, memory, preservation, and the fragility and resilience of the human spirit in the face of challenging experiences. Her projects it would lose all purpose and untitled, blue period were created during periods of grief, using the camera as a tool for reflection and cathartic release.
