In 2009, our family experienced the expected passing of my father, followed within a month by the unexpected death of my sister. Coming home became painful, so I turned to my 4x5 view camera as a buffer between me and this new reality. For nearly a decade I photographed my late sister’s four children alongside my other nieces and nephews, in places rooted with family history. This helped bridge the gap I saw forming between the relationships of then and now, and provided a cathartic release I didn’t know how else to obtain.
